Understanding Our Therapist Titles
At Counseling Col:lab, our team includes therapists and helping professionals with different degrees, licenses, registrations, and roles. These titles can sometimes feel confusing, so we want to make it easier to understand who you may be meeting with and what their role means.
No matter which provider you choose, our goal is to help you find a strong therapeutic fit based on your needs, goals, identities, concerns, availability, and preferred style of support.

Clinical Psychology Doctoral Student Interns are advanced graduate clinicians currently completing doctoral training in clinical psychology. At Counseling Col:lab, our doctoral student interns have already earned master’s degrees and provide therapy at a level comparable to associate clinicians. The word “intern” refers to their role within a doctoral program, not a lack of clinical training or experience. These clinicians provide therapy under licensed clinical supervision as part of their continued doctoral training.

Associate Clinicians include Registered Associate Marriage and Family Therapists (AMFTs), Registered Associate Clinical Social Workers (ASWs), and Registered Psychological Associates (PSB). These clinicians have completed graduate-level education and are working toward independent licensure while providing therapy under clinical supervision. Associate clinicians offer therapy for individuals, couples, families, children, and teens, depending on their training and areas of focus.

Licensed Clinicians include Licensed Clinical Social Workers (LCSWs), Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists (LMFTs), Licensed Professional Clinical Counselors (LPCCs), and Licensed Psychologists (LP). These providers have completed the education, supervised clinical experience, and licensing requirements needed to practice independently in their field.

Clinical Supervisors at the Counseling Col:lab are experienced licensed clinicians who support the growth, training, and ethical practice of our associate clinicians and doctoral student interns. Some clinical supervisors may not provide direct therapy services and instead focus on supervision, consultation, and clinical support for our team.

Coaches provide goal-oriented support, skill-building, accountability, and guidance. Coaching is different from psychotherapy and is not a substitute for mental health treatment, diagnosis, crisis care, or therapy for trauma or significant mental health concerns. When therapy is the better fit, we will help guide you toward the appropriate provider.
