Individual Counseling

Looking to engage in a genuine one-on-one journey to self-improvement and a deeper understanding of your thoughts, behaviors, and emotional world?

What is Individual Therapy?

Individual counseling is a confidential, supportive, one-on-one dialogue between you—the client—and one of our trained professionals. These conversations are private and personal, meaning each session is customized for your experience. During these sessions, you will identify problematic or troubling thoughts and behaviors with your therapist and lean into conversations full of understanding, self-compassion, and growth.

  • Anytime you have an intimate conversation where the key is to be open and honest, it can leave you feeling vulnerable. However, when you realize the support your therapist has for you, and the healing to be gained, it will be easier to open up. When nearing a sensitive topic like trauma or abuse—although we are tempted—it is essential not to ignore them, or you will create patterns that will not serve you in the long-term. This will also make it harder to develop a productive relationship with your counselor and will take longer to find the relief you’re looking for. The process is not without pain, but the benefits are well worth diving into your insecurities to arrive at a place of lasting life-change.

  • When you participate in therapy, you will receive a new safe space where all of your deepest, most inner thoughts and fears are welcomed! Sometimes it can feel like a burden to place all your thoughts on someone in your life. Having a trained therapist is like always putting your mind into the right hands, someone who will walk with you on the journey of life. When you choose to seek therapy, you are inviting a trained expert into your life who can help you connect and organize your thoughts and experiences to better understand yourself.

How We Foster Healing:

Modalities & Methods

  • This type of counseling focuses on your individual strengths and is rooted in unconditional positive regard. This differs from other approaches that focus on issues or problems. These reframes can help you spark change and positive self-talk.

  • When we emphasize your personal strengths and abilities, de-emphasize past mistakes, recognize personal efforts to improve, and set goals for the future, this type of therapy aims to help you achieve more. By respecting your pacing and beginning your therapeutic journey where it makes sense for you, we keep your needs at the core of our work together!

  • As you build more confidence in yourself you will inspire meaningful change. This practice helps you replace old narratives of yourself that were negative to help create a new positive relationship, an appreciation for the unique gifts you have to share!

Strengths-Based & person -Centered

  • CBT is a common, evidence-based therapy approach that focuses on the connection and reciprocal relationship between thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. Your therapist will train you to notice the power of your thoughts and your actions and how they affect your overall emotional state.

  • To help understand your thought processes, you must identify the negative and unhelpful thoughts that come automatically. Once you uncover those negative thoughts, the next step is to evaluate their validity. The final goal is to replace those negative thoughts with positive ones that can motivate you to take action versus submit to your fears. In CBT, you will learn how attention to thoughts and behaviors can increase your mood.

  • Your thoughts have the power to change your reality—this is something that needs to be protected! Your therapist will work with you to help reframe your mindset, challenge unhelpful thoughts, and develop more positive thinking overall, which will help you have a more positive outlook on life.

Cognitive Behavioral therapy (CBT)

  • DBT integrates mindfulness and skills training to provide comprehensive and evidence-based treatment to create long-lasting change. A therapist may use this technique for those who struggle to manage their emotions and may have more impulse control and self-harm behavior patterns.

  • When using DBT, the goal is to find balance in our efforts to change things and accept the things we can't control. DBT will help you embrace the power of dialectics (for example, the need for acceptance and change) and learn skills like mindfulness, emotion regulation, interpersonal effectiveness, and distress tolerance. DBT offers concrete and specific skills for you to practice and implement across life.

  • DBT can help you create a “life worth living” by building your skills, brick by brick. Once you have mastered learning how to change your behaviors and emotions, you will reap powerful benefits—being able to replace your thinking patterns around misery and distress to find purpose.

Dialectical Behavior therapy (DBT)

  • With Solution-Focused Therapy, the goal is to find the solution quickly and make that the primary focus. This helps alleviate current symptoms of distress versus digging up wounds from the past. This is a brief and short-term intervention that aims to find solutions quickly.

  • This therapeutic approach can work to resolve the current issues you face and help you find peace from situations causing immediate distress. By focusing less on difficulties rooted in the past, your therapist works with you to create solutions for your present. To find solutions, your therapist will look to times in your life where things are going well and will build on those skills that allowed you to be successful.

  • Instead of spending additional time diving deep into underlying issues, your therapist will give you actionable advice. You’ll find the clarity you’re looking for to help you move forward and avoid staying trapped in the past. Your therapist can help you find hope and finally see changes in your life.

Still Not Sure IF mental health Therapy is Right For You?

Each person’s experience and what they gain through therapy can be different but here are some of the most common ways individuals benefit from one-on-one counseling:

  • Therapy can help address the concerns within you that keep you from making changes, or from letting go of fear or anxiety about your next steps. Having these conversations with your therapist will help you reconnect to your passion and excite you to get back on track—and build the skills you need to get there.

  • Individual therapy provides a deeper awareness of your internal self. When sharing your stories and recounting life events, your therapist will highlight important patterns and themes present within your narrative. Their job is to empower you to use this self-understanding to better align with your values.

  • Research supports the undeniable connection between mental and physical health. As you meet with your therapist, you will be in a better mental space, leading to a new understanding and care for your body. As your awareness of yourself increases, you’ll be able to dedicate increased attention toward positive steps you can take in other areas of life.

  • Therapy can help to understand your place in the world. To do that, you must analyze and understand your relationships with others. No matter your relationship status, a therapist can help you strengthen your current relationships and build new connections. Increasing your trust and dealing with insecurities are important areas to address.
