Same, but different

While a life coach falls under the same helping umbrella as a therapist, the roles differ in a myriad of ways. Both a life coach and a therapist strive to be a supportive part of your team as you move through difficult spaces in your life.

Let’s break down how life coaching can support you when therapy doesn’t feel like the right fit.

Timing and intent

Therapy is a long-term relationship that will journey into your past. When those spaces involve revisiting trauma, therapy may be the best choice.

If you are looking to overcome a challenge on a path that feels rooted in your future, a life coach can help you achieve growth with tools and support tailored toward those goals.

Focus and fulfill

While therapy has a distinct focus on unpacking and healing through the experiences and emotional responses you’ve had in your life, life coaching is an active process of identifying a goal or space in your world on which to focus and making a conscious effort to move toward it. Life coaches are often trained in specific industries or aspects of your life in which you are seeking precision support.

Goals and growth

One of the most unique elements of life coaching is the focus on the future. Instead of spending time navigating the hurdles our past has put in the way, together we will focus on what you want to achieve and the most fulfilling ways you can reach for it. Life coaching focuses on setting goals, seeing growth, and challenging you to be the best you possible.

There’s an expiration date on your relationship with your life coach. while the commitment is intensive, it’s also temporary, ensuring you will remain wholly in charge of your path and your growth beyond the goals you specify.

Frequently Asked Questions

Isn’t this just like therapy?

It’s not, though both sides function within helping roles to support you and your growth.

A therapist’s focus on diagnosis, healing, and trauma recovery is a long-term relationship intended to help you cope with the way you move through life and things you’ve experienced.

Conversely, a life coach’s intention is to help you formulate goals and then make suitable plans to reach them. Both a life coach and a therapist are wholly driven to help you succeed and flourish in your life but the uses vary dramatically.

Can I have a life coach and a therapist?

Absolutely!

Since the roles are different but complementary, one may support the other in valuable ways. It’s important that your therapist and life coach are different professionals so that boundaries stay in place as you move through short-term goals and long-term healing.

Sharing these roles across two different relationships may even benefit you in teaching skills around focus, attentiveness, and use of time moving toward the life goal you set with your coach and evaluating the way you’ve previously done so with your therapist. We’d love to work together to support you.

What can’t a life coach do?

A life coach can’t diagnose mental or physical health conditions, nor can they prescribe you medication to manage them. They are not a medical professional, which limits their power in regard to obtaining and marking your medical history in any form. A life coach cannot direct you through healing long-term trauma or recover from ingrained behavior patterns.

What a life coach can do is support you through your trials to reach toward success in a holistic and comprehensive manner that reaches into all the ways you flourish beyond clinical diagnosis.

Are life coaches just expensive ego boosters?

That would be a very resounding no. If you set a goal that is too lenient, or you try to pass off the baton of responsibility in achieving all you have set out to do, your life coach will keep you accountable.

They are not your personal bank of platitudes, and will challenge you with the same vigor they’ll use to celebrate your successes. Your life coach is not in your life to make you feel happy at the moment. Your life coach is a valuable part of your support network helping you reach for contentment and fulfillment in life as a whole. If that requires a little bit of discomfort, they’re here for it.

We don't see things as they are, we see them as we are.

TIPS FOR LIFE COACHING

Progress not perfection

Though life coaching is a fine-tuned tool in curating a skill or accomplishing a goal, it is not a guarantee you will achieve it without missteps or backslides. Through your focused relationship with your life coach, remember that the key will always be making progress. Achievement matters at every level, even if it’s not perfect.

Vulnerability talks

When working toward a focused goal or through a specific roadblock, making space to truly open yourself up to risk can be all the difference in how much progress you make with your life coach. Prepare yourself for discomfort. Open your heart and your mind to offering a kind of vulnerability that may ache to find the magic on the other side.

Self-awareness helps

A root understanding of who you are or where you want to be is a vital part of creating your success in your life coaching relationship. Recognizing the habits you have as well as the fundamental experiences you bring to the table can help ensure you are making a strong match with the life coach you choose and find success.
